IBAN Demands Apology from Wike, Threatens Boycott of Briefings

By Asmaโ€™u J. Abubakar

The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to publicly apologise to Seun Okinbaloye over remarks considered offensive and unprofessional.

As reported by Vanguard newspaper, the association issued a statement on Monday, condemning the ministerโ€™s comments, describing them as capable of undermining press freedom and threatening the safety of journalists.

IBAN expressed โ€œdeep concernโ€ over comments made by the minister during a live programme on Channels Television on April 3, 2026. During the broadcast, Wike was quoted as saying of journalist Seun Okinbaloye, โ€œIf there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,โ€ in reaction to the journalistโ€™s interviewing style on the Politics Today programme.

IBAN noted that such statements, especially from a high-ranking public official, could create a climate of fear and discourage media practitioners from carrying out their responsibilities effectively.

The association stressed that the media plays a vital role in promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance, and therefore must be protected from any form of intimidation. It added that journalists should be allowed to perform their duties without interference, harassment, or undue pressure from those in authority.

IBAN further acknowledged reports that the minister attempted to clarify his earlier remarks. However, it maintained that the situation still requires a clear retraction and public apology in order to maintain public confidence and uphold democratic values.

According to the association, failure by the minister to meet these demands may result in a boycott of his press briefings and official media engagements by member stations across the country. This action, it explained, is aimed at defending the integrity of the media profession and sending a strong message against any form of intimidation.

IBAN said failure to comply could lead to a boycott by independent broadcast stations.

โ€œShould the minister fail to meet these requests within a reasonable period, IBAN will have no choice but to advise all independent broadcast stations to suspend coverage of all press briefings, media chats, and official news conferences hosted by the FCT minister,โ€ the statement reads.

The association also called on government officials to maintain respectful and professional relationships with the media, emphasizing that cooperation between both parties is essential for national development.

IBAN, however, expressed its willingness to engage in dialogue to resolve the matter amicably, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of journalists in Nigeria.
