By Amos W. Peter

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to boost investment in modern law enforcement systems, training, and intelligence gathering as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Stanley Kingsley Nkwocha, the President made this known on Tuesday at the grand finale of the 2026 National Police Day celebration held at Eagle Square, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu stressed the importance of security to national development, stating, โ€œNo nation can make meaningful progress without a secure social environment.โ€

He further assured that his administration would sustain reforms in the police, saying, โ€œWe will continue to support these reforms through sustained investment in training and capacity development, modern equipment and technology, improved intelligence and investigative capabilities, and better welfare and working conditions for police personnel.โ€

The President added that the goal is to build a more effective force capable of tackling modern security challenges, declaring, โ€œWe are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time.โ€

Highlighting the role of security in national growth, Tinubu said, โ€œNigeria must strengthen those who protect the nation. Security is not simply the defence of territory or the prevention of crime; it is the first currency of progress.โ€

He also called for stronger cooperation between citizens and law enforcement, emphasising community policing as essential to building trust.

Paying tribute to fallen officers, the President described their sacrifices as a lasting symbol of national duty, noting that their memory must continue to inspire serving personnel.

Also speaking, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, assured Nigerians of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline, professionalism, and accountability within the force.

The ceremony featured march past, procession, and tactical displays by various police units, as well as cadets from the Police Academy, showcasing operational readiness.

Dignitaries at the event included deputy governors of Nasarawa and Ebonyi states, representatives of the National Assembly leadership, service chiefs, and former Inspectors-General of Police such as Ogbonnaya Onovo, Mohammed Abubakar, Kayode Egbetokun, Suleiman Abba, and Usman Alkali Baba.

Also present were members of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), senior government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps.

National Police Day is observed annually to recognise the contributions of police officers to national security and honour those who have died in the line of duty.
