Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have announced that they will resume duties by 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday following the suspension of the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
In a report by Vangurad, the President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UCH, Ibadan, Dr. Uthman Adedeji, disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He noted that members of the association would comply with the directive issued by the national body.
The strike, which disrupted activities in many government-owned hospitals across the country, was earlier declared by NARD due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet several demands. These include the reversal of the revised professional allowance, payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, and the release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.
Adedeji explained that the decision to suspend the strike followed an emergency meeting of NARD’s National Executive Council. According to him, the Federal Government had taken steps to address some of the issues raised, including reversing its stance on the revised allowance.
He, however, noted that full hospital operations would not resume immediately. Doctors will first use the period before Wednesday morning to properly hand over patients currently under their care to consultants.
He added that stable patients may be discharged, while the hospital will temporarily halt the admission of new patients, including emergency cases, until full services resume.
Adedeji also stated that some doctors might be allowed additional time to attend to critically ill patients, subject to approval from the association’s leadership.
He reaffirmed the commitment of resident doctors to patient care and urged the Federal Government to urgently resolve the remaining issues to prevent further disruptions in the healthcare sector.
