Barcelona tightened their grip on the La Liga title race with a commanding 4–1 victory over city rivals Espanyol at the Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday, extending their lead at the top to nine points.
The Catalan side took full advantage after title rivals Real Madrid were held to a 1–1 draw by Girona a day earlier. Barcelona dominated from the outset, controlling possession and dictating the tempo. Their early pressure paid off in the 9th minute when Ferran Torres headed in a corner from Lamine Yamal for the opener.
Yamal and Torres combined again midway through the first half, with the teenager delivering a precise pass that allowed Torres to double the lead and give Barcelona a comfortable advantage at halftime.
Espanyol responded early in the second half as Pol Lozano capitalized on a defensive lapse to pull one back, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
The visitors pushed forward and thought they had a chance to level after Torres saw a potential hat-trick goal ruled out for offside.
However, Yamal ensured the result late on, marking his 100th La Liga appearance with a goal after a goalkeeping error left him with a simple finish. Substitute Marcus Rashford added a fourth moments later, converting a chipped pass from Frenkie de Jong to seal an emphatic win.
The result leaves Barcelona in firm control of the title race with seven matches remaining, though attention now turns to their Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid, where they must overturn a 2–0 deficit.
