UNIMAID Students Battle Heat During Examinations

By Balikis O. Usman

Students of the University of Maiduguri are currently facing challenging conditions as intense heat continues to affect their concentration and comfort during the ongoing examination period.

The examinations, which commenced on April 15, are taking place across various faculties. Although some examination halls provide a relatively conducive environment, many students say the high temperatures have made the process more stressful.

Several students reported that the heat has made it difficult to stay focused during long hours in examination halls, with some experiencing fatigue even before the start of their papers. As the day progresses, the rising temperature further affects their ability to maintain concentration.

In response to these conditions, some students adopt coping strategies such as sitting close to windows for better ventilation or using hand fans discreetly during exams while trying to remain focused.

“The heat has added extra stress to this exam period, and it’s not easy to concentrate for a long time,” said Aisha Abdulraheem, a student in the Nursing Department.

Despite these difficulties, students continue to show resilience by attending their examinations and preparing as best as they can. Many have adjusted their study routines, choosing to read during early morning or late evening hours, while also staying hydrated to cope with the weather.

Students noted that not all examination halls are unconducive, as some offer a more comfortable environment, while others remain difficult for writing exams, especially under extreme heat conditions.

As the examination period continues, students remain determined to complete their papers successfully despite the combined pressure of academic demands and harsh weather conditions.

The heat is becoming unbearable for students. The school knowing fully well that conducive environment is the best for learning and assimilation of what they’ve been taught.
