Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump were rushed out from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunfire erupted near the venue in Washington, D.C.
According to CNN International, the incident began when a suspect allegedly armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a security checkpoint, prompting law enforcement officers to open fire. President Trump, who was addressing attendees at the time, was quickly rushed off stage after Vice President Vance was rushed out. Officials later confirmed that all senior government officials present were unharmed.
Authorities have taken the suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, into custody. Jeanine Pirro stated that the individual is expected to face charges including the use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Eyewitness accounts described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out. Wolf Blitzer, who was present outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, reported seeing the gunman firing at close range, causing attendees to flee and take cover as security personnel responded swiftly.
During the confrontation, a United States Secret Service agent was shot while wearing protective gear and has since been hospitalized. Their condition has not yet been publicly disclosed.
