Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre by the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged cybercrime offences.
According to Vanguard, the court ordered that Sowore remain in custody until Wednesday when proceedings are expected to continue on a two-count charge filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS). The charges stem from a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”
The remand followed the revocation of Sowore’s bail by Justice Mohammed Umar. In a ruling delivered on June 16, the judge also issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial, where he was expected to open his defence.
Sowore had earlier chosen to represent himself in the matter following the withdrawal of his legal team from the case.
Meanwhile, Justice Umar on Monday dismissed a motion seeking his recusal from the trial over allegations of bias, clearing the way for the proceedings to continue.
